HYDRO-TECH SONIC DRILLING

The sonic rig, one more item keeping Traut a leader.

The SV100 Versa Sonic drill rig is equipped with a specially designed sonic vibratory drill head. This drill head combines rotation with high-frequency vibration to advance the drill pipe. Sonic vibrations are transmitted down the drill pipe to the drill bit causing surrounding soil particles to fluidize, allowing for penetration. Core sampling is done ahead of the outer casing. Once the 4” core barrel is advanced to its desired depth, an outer drill pipe is then advanced outside the core barrel to keep the borehole open. Prior to each core sample run, the 6” 8” or 10” outer casing is sealed off, preventing cross-contamination and formation mixing. The core barrel is then removed from the borehole, and the sample is extracted into a plastic sleeve.

With the Sonic rig, we can core in all of the following formations:

• Unconsolidated Soils
• Clays
• Cobbles and Boulders
• Shale
• Sandstone
• Mudstone
• Limestone
• Granite and other bedrocks
• Landfill Debris
• Concrete

The greatest advantage of Sonic Drilling is its ability to obtain large volumes of undisturbed continuous core samples. This provides a detailed, inch by inch analysis for engineers. Core samples can be stored and transported in the sleeve, or cut open on site to photograph and log. Sonic Drilling provides a precise and detailed profile of any soil conditions.
