Well Chlorination / Disinfection

Disinfecting your well can be very beneficial.  It can eliminate or reduce many kinds of bacteria and reduce unpleasant tastes and odors. Most homeowners can disinfect their own wells. To learn when and how to disinfect your well contact the Minnesota Department of Health. Contact Traut Companies if you would like us to perform this procedure for you.

How much water do I need?

Wisely planned, a dependable well can supply all the water you need now and into the future. A rule of thumb is to have a well produce a minimum of 5 gallons per minute (GPM). However, you need to take into consideration peak demands. These would include lawn irrigation systems, swimming pools, hot tubs, and extra guests. Whether your well produces 1GPM or 100 GPM, the staff at Traut Companies can design a water system to fit your needs.

Preventative Maintenance

Your pump and well system will run many years with very little maintenance. However, there are a few things that should be done annually to prevent any major problems.

  • Check the following
    • Pressure of your water system
    • Draw-down of your pressure tank
    • Contact points in the pressure switch
    • For any leaks or rust spots
  • Have your water tested
  • Disinfect your well

If you are having any problems with your water system contact
Traut Companies at 320-251-5090 or 800-728-5091

Pump and Pressure Tank Size

The standard size pump is a ½ HP with a 20-gallon capacity air tank. This is sufficient to operate most homes. However, you may want to consider a larger pump and tank if any of the following occurs:

  • If your water usage will be higher than average because of a lawn irrigation system, swimming pool, hot tub, or extra bathrooms
  • Or if your well depth is over 80 feet

Traut Companies can answer any of your questions and advise you of the best system to meet your needs.
